Perfect looking fire effects require certain lighting techniques. But, there is no general rule how to create fire effects.

The ideal lamp type, gel, type and e.g. size of a bounce board depends on the situation in the scene and the required look.

Here we show you some ideas how to create natural looking fire effects.

All examples shown here have one thing in common: the effect generator LFXHub feeds the lamp(s) with its HD fire preset.

Fire and candle effects

1. Example

Single channel fire effect using a balloon as bounce board

Lamp controlled by LFXHub: fire effect

reflection of flickering balloon on helmet   18" helium ballon as bounce board

Watch a film sample here (Title: "Todestunnel")

Advantage:

  • talent may wear glasses
  • easy setup
  • balloon is very cheap

Alternatively you can use a rectangular shaped bounce board with gel " 272 soft golden reflector" and/or lamp with "135 Deep golden amber" or similar.

Please be aware an original fire has hard cast shadows. In practice you should soften the effect a bit using a WD or frost.

If there is no golden reflector available you could also use a rescue foil blanket.

2. Example

Single channel effect of a candle/lighther

Watch a film sample here (Title: "The time of the wolf")

    As a fill light:

chinese moonAdditionally the candle flame and the fill light (chinese moon hold from top) is synchonized with the Lightingsensor with the LFXHub.

Control 12 V Halogen lamps with the RC4 wireless system. Create a wireless controlled flickering lantern!

For a close-up of these talents a key light as shown to the right would be suitable.

In this scene the electrician used a chinese moon as a flickerring fill light on a long bar following her whereever shoe goes.

How flickering shadows work with the LFXHub

lamp / gel setup for 3D fire effect

As shown to the left three lamps - separately controlled by the LFXHub - will initiate three different cast shadows of an object on a surface (here is simply a wall).

Original flames of a fireplace "dance" around.

The three channel "fire" preset of the LFXHub automatically alternates the dim level of each channel the way a real flame would behave - flickering shadows.

The gel "deep golden amber" is used to get the right color temperature, the attached 1/2 white diffusion softens the cast shadows of the three lamps, the effect looks more natural.

Besides the adaptation to the filemant inertia the "ramp" feature of the LFXHub also modifies the transitions between the channels (hard, medium, soft).

Shown to the left is a realistic looking three channel fire effect of a fire place.
A real fire flame has never been used in this scene.

practical hints:

  • the distance between the gels to the lamps should be at least 30 cm (1 ft)
  • the size of surface of the white diffusion gel should correspond to the original (or pretended) size of the fire source
  • instead of using three halogen based lamps you could also use e.g. a Parabeam 400 or some household type bulbs fixed in a geled box.
  • use different effect gels on the three lamps - the color temperature would change either
  • if the object is too far away from the background you will not see flickering shadows, normally a distance of around 60 cm ( 2 ft) is ideal, If there are no objects in front of the background a single channel effect is sufficient.

If you remove the object you will not see any flickering shadows.
